Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has voiced anger that the leader of the opposition and other opposition leaders did not attend the state ceremony to open the July memorial, despite being invited. He said there could be political distance from the government, but by not standing beside those killed and injured in the July mass uprising, the opposition had shown that it does not embrace July.
The prime minister spoke on Monday after opening the newly built July memorial at Dhaka’s historic Osmani Udyan.
Tarique Rahman said the leader of the opposition and other senior opposition leaders had been properly invited. Even if they did not sit on the government stage, they could have come and sat beside the families of the July martyrs and the injured, he said.
The prime minister said they should have come to the ceremony to honour the martyrs and the injured, through whose sacrifice they are today recognised as leader of the opposition and members of parliament.
He said there could well be political distance between the government and the opposition. But had they stood beside the martyrs and the injured, it would have shown that they too hold the spirit of July in their hearts. Their absence, he said, proved that they do not embrace July.
