Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram has said the Awami League, whose activities are banned, is the biggest party of thieves in the history of the world.
The Awami League thought it would stay in power until doomsday by looting, the Speaker said. It thought life would go on like that. Its people fled the country with thousands of crores of taka. The present government will act against the corrupt through the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Many Awami League leaders have already been punished for killings under the interim government, and a court has sentenced Sheikh Hasina to death, he said.
He made the remarks as chief guest at a public reception given to him on Tuesday afternoon, 20 October, at the Lalmohan upazila parishad in Bhola, organised by the upazila and municipal BNP and its affiliated organisations, to mark his election as chairman of the Asia-Pacific group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
“Every person now has freedom of speech. They can criticise the government and the head of government. When a woman MP was accused of seizing a hospital, the prime minister told her to resign,” the Speaker said.
“State minister Ishraque Hossain has also resigned, even though he was doing good work. He had gone to crack down on drug dealers who fired on the police. But he should not have taken a weapon in his hand, which is why the prime minister told him to resign. No party in the past has taken such action against its own MPs and ministers. It has been possible because Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is uncompromising,” he said.
Lalmohan upazila nirbahi officer Md Sifat Bin Sadek, additional superintendent of police Satyajit Kumar Ghosh, police station officer-in-charge Nazrul Islam Majumder and upazila BNP president Md Zafar Iqbal were among those present.
