The Election Commission (EC) has ordered that applications to change voting area be settled by 5 November ahead of union parishad elections due to begin in January. After the update, the voter list will be finalised on 25 November. Only those whose names are on the final list will be able to vote in the local government elections.
In an instruction issued on Monday, 19 October, the EC told all upazila election officers in the country to take the necessary steps.
The instruction says the updated voter list will be finalised to include those born on or before 31 October 2008 who are registered in the voter database by 31 October this year. A draft voter list will be published across the country on 5 November for this purpose. After claims and objections are settled, the final voter list will be published on 25 November.
Applications to change voting area for the local government elections may be made until 31 October. They must be settled by 5 November.
According to the Election Commission, voting in the first phase of the union parishad elections will be held on 21 January next year, the second on 4 February, the third on 29 April, the fourth on 13 May and the fifth and final phase on 27 May. District election officers will announce the schedules for these elections.
The plan had been to finalise the updated voter list for the local government elections last August. Under the EC’s plan, union parishad elections were to begin in November, with the schedule announced in September, and printing of the voter list was also to have begun.
But because the voting was postponed, the Election Commission reopened voter transfers across the country.
