Maharashtra deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde has vowed a hard line against criminal gangs after shots were fired at Bollywood actor Tiger Shroff’s car. Gang violence will not be tolerated in Mumbai in any form, he warned, and tough action will be taken against the attackers.
On Sunday night Shinde visited Tiger Shroff’s home in Bandra, Mumbai, to ask after his health. He spoke to the actor’s family and assured them of their safety.
Shinde said it was time to act again as Mumbai had in the 1990s, when criminal gangs were uprooted during the city’s gang wars. Warning the attackers, he said: “The answer will be a counter-answer, bullets for bullets.”
Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said no one involved in the shooting would be spared. At a press conference in Nagpur on Monday, 19 October, he said Mumbai police had already identified several suspects from leads found in the investigation, and they would be arrested soon.
“Whatever group or individual is involved in this incident, no one will escape. Mumbai police know how to deal with anyone who tries to carry out crimes with threats like this,” Fadnavis said.
The chief minister said those who planned the attack would be identified as well as those directly involved, and steps would be taken to bring them to justice even if they were outside Maharashtra or abroad.
Asked about taking the notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi into custody, Fadnavis said a request had already been sent and the legal process was under way. The state would coordinate with other states to catch suspects there, and seek the central government’s help over those abroad.
At about 7pm on Sunday, unidentified attackers fired at Tiger Shroff as he left a football club in Mumbai’s Juhu area by car. Two people, including the actor’s driver, were injured. Tiger Shroff was not hit.
