“Ever since I bought him the motorcycle, I was afraid. When he was out and a call came from an unknown number, my heart would shake, thinking it was bad news,” the boy’s father said as he sat beside his son’s body, breaking down in tears again and again.

A 15-year-old class nine pupil was killed when a pickup hit his motorcycle in Chougachha, Jashore, on Sunday morning. Two classmates riding with him were injured. The accident happened at around 7:30am in the Fastala area of the Chougachha-Maheshpur road.

All three were class nine pupils at Chandpara Secondary School and lived in Chandpara village. Relatives said the three friends were riding his Pulsar motorcycle to a private tuition class when a pickup coming from the Maheshpur direction hit them head-on near Fastala. All three were thrown onto the road and seriously injured, and the pickup drove off.

Local people took them to Chougachha upazila health complex, where doctors declared the boy dead. The two injured boys were given first aid and are out of danger, doctors said.

His father said the boy had begged for a motorcycle for a long time. He had not wanted to buy one, but his elder son, who lives in Singapore, said they should, and he bought the Pulsar seven or eight months ago. “Today that fear came true,” he said. The boy’s mother fainted repeatedly, crying that both she and his father had told him not to take the motorcycle.

Some of his friends said he liked riding fast and often rode at more than 100km an hour, but how fast the motorcycle was going at the time of the accident could not be confirmed.

Chougachha police station officer-in-charge Mamunur Rashid said the body had been handed to the family after legal formalities, efforts were under way to identify the pickup, and legal action was being taken.
