A red alert has been issued for four regions of Saudi Arabia. On Sunday, 18 October, the country’s National Center for Meteorology (NCM) issued the alert for heavy rain in parts of the four regions, warning that thunderstorms could cause flash floods.
The alert covers parts of the Jazan, Asir, Al-Baha and Makkah regions, where moderate to heavy thundery rain is forecast. It may be accompanied by hail and strong winds capable of raising dust storms.
According to the NCM’s latest forecast, the unsettled weather could affect several areas of the four regions, and heavy rain has raised the risk of flash floods.
Fog is also forecast in parts of Jazan, Asir, Al-Baha and Makkah and in coastal areas of the Eastern Province, which could reduce visibility.
Temperatures are expected to be high in several Saudi cities. Dammam could reach a maximum of 42 degrees Celsius, Makkah 39 degrees, and Riyadh and Buraidah 38 degrees.
Madinah could reach 37 degrees Celsius, and Jeddah and Jazan 36 degrees. Hail could reach 33 degrees, Arar, Sakaka and Najran 32 degrees, and Tabuk 28 degrees Celsius.
The south-western highlands will be a little cooler, with 25 degrees Celsius in Abha and 24 degrees in Al-Baha.
Humidity could reach 90 per cent in Abha, Al-Baha and Jazan, 85 per cent in Jeddah and Dammam, and 80 per cent in Makkah.
Elsewhere, humidity is forecast to reach 70 per cent in Tabuk, Arar and Sakaka, 55 per cent in Madinah and Hail, 35 per cent in Riyadh and Najran, and 30 per cent in Buraidah. Source: Gulf News
