Iran’s foreign minister has said there is no military solution to the conflict between the United States and Iran, and that the war cannot be ended by imposing more sanctions on Tehran, Anadolu reported.
“There is no military solution, and no solution can be found on the basis of more sanctions either,” Abbas Araghchi told foreign ambassadors in Tehran on Sunday, according to the state news agency IRNA.
Only steps based on negotiation, justice and diplomatic dignity can address the situation and secure a final settlement by ending the war and “illegal aggression” launched against the Islamic Republic, he said. If Washington chose military action, Tehran was ready to take every necessary measure to defend itself more strongly, he warned.
The US and Israel began the war against Iran on 28 February. Tehran responded with missile and drone attacks across the region and effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic energy route, after which the US military imposed a naval blockade on Iran’s ports.
Efforts to end the war have continued since a framework agreement signed on 18 June, which aims to pave the way for a final peace deal covering shipping in the strategic waterway and Iran’s nuclear programme.
