Dmitry Medvedev, deputy head of Russia’s Security Council, has warned that disabling or shutting down Russia’s new Rassvet satellite network at Ukraine’s request would amount to destroying it and could lead to a “full-scale space war”, Anadolu reported.

“Space is a very crowded place, so we need to be courteous to one another,” Medvedev said in a Telegram post on Sunday. “I hope the Americans understand this, because otherwise their low-orbit Starlink satellites will fall like ornaments from a dried-out Christmas tree.”

On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told the Financial Times he had asked US President Donald Trump to sanction Russian and Chinese companies building satellite networks to rival Starlink. He said China was helping Russia develop the technology and that the Rassvet network could be operational by the end of this year or early next year, which could make Russian air strikes on Ukraine more accurate as Moscow steps up its air campaign.

Medvedev’s remarks have raised fears of new tension between Russia and the United States over space-based technology.
