According to the media cell, a four-and-a-half-month-old boy named Raiyan died while being treated at Rangpur Medical College Hospital on 16 October. His father, Abdur Razzak, lives in Thakurgaon Sadar upazila.

That brings the number of dengue deaths in Rangpur division from 1 January to 22 October this year to 10. Of them, five died in Rangpur district, including at Rangpur Medical College Hospital, two at Kurigram General Hospital and three at Dinajpur Medical College Hospital.

Of the 454 patients detected in the seven days, 417 were admitted to hospital. Over the same period, 424 dengue patients being treated at government and private hospitals recovered and went home.

In the last 24 hours, 48 new dengue patients were admitted to government and private hospitals across the division: 25 in Dinajpur, nine in Lalmonirhat and 14 in Gaibandha.

From 1 January to 22 October this year, 3,978 people in Rangpur division have been infected with dengue, according to the media cell. Of them, 3,748 have recovered and gone home, and 220 are currently in hospital.

Dr Wajed Ali, acting divisional health director for Rangpur, said dengue could not be prevented by relying on hospitals and treatment alone. Regular clean-up drives must be carried out in city corporations, municipal areas and every household to destroy the breeding grounds of Aedes mosquitoes, he said. People should also not ignore even a mild fever and should see a doctor quickly.
