KALAPARA, Patuakhali — A 50-year-old woman fish farmer in Patuakhali’s Kalapara upazila has accused unidentified attackers of poisoning her fish enclosure and destroying fish worth about 6 lakh taka, or roughly $5,500, police said.

The farmer, Monwara Begum, filed a written complaint at Kalapara police station against two or three unidentified people, officials said.

The incident took place Saturday morning at Kankuni Para village in Baliatali union of Kalapara upazila.

According to the complaint, Monwara began fish farming about five years ago after leasing an enclosure from a local school called the Shishu Palli Academy. Sometime between midnight Friday and Saturday morning, attackers entered her enclosure and poisoned the water in what police described as the apparent result of a prior dispute.

She alleged that the attackers carried away about 4 lakh taka (around $3,700) worth of rohu, catla, grass carp, mrigal and other species. Another roughly 2 lakh taka (about $1,800) worth of fish were left floating dead in the enclosure, leaving her in severe financial distress, she said.

“My husband died five years ago,” Monwara said. “I supported the family by managing some land my husband left and this fish enclosure. I never imagined the attackers would cause such big damage. Now I am almost destitute. I demand that those responsible be quickly brought under the law.”

Sub-inspector Zakir Hossain of Kalapara police station said: “We have received the complaint about poisoning of the fish enclosure. Necessary legal action will be taken after an investigation.”
