BAUPHAL, Patuakhali — A 30-year-old housewife, Mosammat Mariam Begum, drowned in a pond in Patuakhali’s Bauphal upazila on Saturday evening after suffering a seizure, police said.
She was pulled from the water around 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, and rushed to the Bauphal Upazila Health Complex, where the duty doctor declared her dead, officials said.
Mariam Begum, the wife of Sujon Sikdar, lived in the bus stand area of Dashpara union in the upazila. Her family and mother-in-law said she had suffered from a seizure disorder for a long time.
She went to the pond’s edge around 5 p.m. Saturday with her two young children after they finished playing, family members said. After sending the children inside, she was washing dishes when she is believed to have suffered a seizure and fallen into the water.
When she did not return for a long time, her children alerted her mother-in-law and the family began a search. Mariam was eventually found submerged in the pond, pulled out and taken to the hospital, where the doctor declared her dead.
Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Bauphal police station, said the body had been taken into police custody from the hospital. “Legal proceedings in the case are underway,” he said.
