PATUAKHALI — The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has dissolved its Galachipa and Dashmina upazila committees for failing to campaign for Nurul Haque Nur, the party-backed candidate in the Patuakhali-3 (Galachipa-Dashmina) constituency, party officials said.
The decision was announced in a statement signed by BNP senior joint secretary general Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Saturday morning, Jan. 17. A letter was sent to Patuakhali district BNP president Snehangshu Sarker Kutti and general secretary Advocate Mujibur Rahman Toton.
Party sources said the BNP fielded no candidate of its own in Patuakhali-3 in the coming parliamentary election and instead backed Nur, who is president of the Gono Odhikar Parishad. A section of the Galachipa and Dashmina upazila BNP committees, however, was reluctant to carry out the party decision and did not play an active role on the ground. They were instead accused of working for Hasan Mamun, a recently expelled member of the BNP central executive committee who is running as an independent.
To maintain organizational discipline and ensure the party decision is carried out, central BNP decided to dissolve the Galachipa and Dashmina upazila committees, party sources said. Local leaders and workers were also warned to work for the party-backed candidate.
Earlier, a delegation led by Bilkis Jahan Shirin, BNP organizational secretary for the Barishal division, met BNP leaders in Galachipa and Dashmina upazilas and urged them to work for Nur.
A senior BNP leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: “If anyone defies the party decision and takes a stand against our unified movement and electoral strategy, there is no alternative to organizational action. The same action has been taken against independent candidate Hasan Mamun.”
Siddiqur Rahman, president of the dissolved Galachipa upazila BNP committee, said: “When a person has been expelled from the party, it is natural that the workers will also be expelled. But the decision came late. We have no option to work for any other candidate. We are with Hasan Mamun.”
Patuakhali district BNP general secretary Advocate Mujibur Rahman Toton said: “I have received the paperwork on the dissolution of the Dashmina and Galachipa upazila BNP committees. That is all I can say for now.”
