BHOLA — Police have arrested the alleged mastermind and two accomplices in the killing of an auto-rickshaw driver in Bhola’s Lalmohan upazila, but have not yet recovered the stolen vehicle, the district police chief said.

The driver, Abu Bakar Siddique, was hacked to death and his battery-powered rickshaw was taken, police said.

Those arrested were identified as Mohammad Ibrahim, 36, from Charkalmi union under Dulahat police station in Charfasson upazila, who police described as the chief planner; and his accomplices Mohammad Raja, 32, and Kazi Tarek, 35, both residents of Deula union in Borhanuddin upazila.

Bhola Superintendent of Police Mohammad Shahidullah Kawsar confirmed the arrests at a news conference at the SP’s office hall on Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 7.

On Dec. 31, Dhaka Post had published a report headlined “Driver hacked to death, auto-rickshaw snatched.”

At the news conference, Kawsar said seven attackers boarded Siddique’s auto-rickshaw at about 8:30 p.m. on Dec. 30 at the Charfasson bus stand, saying they wanted to go to Borhanuddin. Around 9:30 p.m., in the Kachuakhali area of Lalmohan upazila, the attackers stabbed Siddique on the right side of his chest with a sharp knife, dumped him and fled with the vehicle. Siddique’s son Sultan filed a murder case at Lalmohan police station on Jan. 1.

Police arrested Ibrahim on Monday, Jan. 5, using digital forensics, Kawsar said. Ibrahim confessed during interrogation, and based on his information police arrested Raja and Tarek.

Ibrahim and Raja have multiple cases against them in Dhaka, the police chief said.

Kawsar said the knife used in the killing had been recovered and that efforts were underway to arrest the other suspects and recover the auto-rickshaw. Other district police officials were present at the briefing.
