Former Awami League councillor hacked to death in Jashore

JASHORE — Unidentified attackers hacked to death Ziauddin Polash, a former councillor of Noapara Pourashava’s Ward 4 and general secretary of the ward Awami League unit, in Avoynagar upazila, police said.

The attackers struck around 10 p.m. Saturday in an abandoned house behind the income tax office in Noapara Pourashava town, leaving Polash bleeding at the scene.

Residents took him to the Avoynagar Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead around 10:15 p.m. News of the killing spread panic through Noapara town, and the streets emptied within moments.

Avoynagar police arrived at the hospital around 10:30 p.m. and recovered the body.

Avoynagar police station officer-in-charge Emdadul Karim said an investigation was under way, with several teams working on the killing.

Polash’s father, labor leader and Ward 4 councillor Ibrahim Hossain Sardar, was shot dead by unidentified attackers nearly two decades ago.
