PIROJPUR — The July uprising’s fighters did not shed their blood only for a change of government, Adviser Farida Akhter said.

She made the remarks at a public gathering on the grounds of Pirojpur Government Boys’ High School on Monday, Jan. 19, organized by the district administration to promote the referendum and encourage voters.

Akhter said the 1972 constitution has been amended many times and is no longer the original constitution. It has been revised whenever needed to keep someone in power, she said. A “yes” vote, she said, would ensure that in the future no single government can amend the constitution on its own and that no one is allowed to become an autocrat or fascist. Candidates who go to Parliament and form a government cannot work against the July charter, she said.

Pirojpur Deputy Commissioner Abu Saeed chaired the event. Superintendent of Police Mohammad Manzoor Ahmed Siddiqui, District Election Officer Abdul Mannan and District Information Officer Parikshit Chowdhury also attended, along with officials and employees of government and non-government offices, teachers and people from various professions.
