NARAYANGANJ — A mason fatally stabbed a shopkeeper’s wife in Narayanganj’s Rupganj upazila on Friday afternoon, and was then beaten to death by an angry crowd within half an hour, police said.

The two deaths occurred Friday, Jan. 16, at the Kerabo intersection in Kanchan municipality, police said.

The woman was identified as Amena Begum, 45, wife of local grocer Babul Dewan. The suspect beaten to death was Mehedi Islam, 32, a mason from Birabo Khalpar in the same upazila and the son of Mostafa Mia.

Police and eyewitnesses said Mehedi had recently completed tile work at Dewan’s newly built house. Around 3 p.m. on Friday, finding the house empty, he entered to steal a mobile phone, they said. When Amena spotted him, Mehedi stabbed her in the neck.

Neighbors who came running at her screams detained Mehedi. Amena was rushed to a local hospital but died while being treated. As word of her death spread, angry relatives and residents turned on Mehedi.

Eyewitnesses said police arrived and took the suspect into custody, but the enraged crowd seized him from officers and began beating him. A video that spread on social media showed officers trying to push the suspect into a police vehicle as a group of people dragged him onto the road and struck him with kicks, punches and bricks. He died at the scene.

Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Mehedi Islam, in charge of Narayanganj district police’s Circle C, confirmed the incident. “The situation turned tense as soon as police arrived at the scene,” he said. “Before we could take the suspect fully into custody, the crowd attacked him.”

Both bodies were sent to Narayanganj General Hospital for autopsy, police said, adding that separate legal proceedings would be initiated in each death.
