MADARIPUR — A 12-year-old mentally ill girl died under mysterious circumstances in Madaripur’s Shibchar on Saturday, residents said.

The incident occurred around noon on Jan. 24 in Ward 7 of Shibchar municipality, local residents said.

The deceased was identified as Halima Khatun, 12. She was mentally unwell, according to her family. Halima lived with her mother, Kakoli Begum, as tenants at Liton Mia’s house in Shibchar town. Their ancestral home is in the Sare Egaro Roshi area of Shibchar upazila.

According to local sources, Halima’s father, Hanif Khan, died of rabies about five years ago. Since then, her mother Kakoli Begum has supported the family by working as a domestic help. Halima was the eldest of three sisters.

Residents said several children noticed Halima hanging by a rope from outside the house around noon. Neighbors then went to the scene and found her body suspended. Police recovered the body and sent it to the morgue at Madaripur 250-bed District Hospital for autopsy. Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Shibchar police station in Madaripur, said police are working to uncover the mystery surrounding the death.
