MADARIPUR — Susmoy Chakraborty, 25, an employee at the agent banking branch of Dutch-Bangla Bank in Madaripur, was robbed of 2.4 million taka (24 lakh) in cash. The incident took place around 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, in the Kamaldi Bridge area of Rajoir upazila on the Dhaka-Barishal highway. Susmoy is being treated at the Rajoir upazila health complex.
Police and the victim’s account say Susmoy Chakraborty works as a DSR at the Tekerhat master agent branch of Dutch-Bangla Bank. From Thursday afternoon into the evening, he collected a total of 2.4 million taka from various agent branches: 700,000 taka from the Phultala branch in Paikpara union, 700,000 taka from the Amgram bazar branch and 1 million taka from the Tekerhat master agent branch. He then set out by motorcycle for the Mojumdar Bazar agent branch.
En route, when he reached the Kamaldi Bridge area on the Dhaka-Barishal highway, a group of robbers on three motorcycles blocked him. Susmoy alleges that the robbers showed him a visiting card, seized the 2.4 million taka and fled. On receiving word, Rajoir police station officer-in-charge Sheikh Aminul Islam and other officers visited the scene.
Monotosh Sarkar, manager of Dutch-Bangla Bank’s Tekerhat branch, said police investigation began as soon as the incident occurred. Senior bank officials have also been informed.
Rajoir police station officer-in-charge Sheikh Aminul Islam said the victim was so terrified he handed the money bag to the robbers without resistance. He said the young employee stood at the scene unable to call out to anyone.
He added that police arrived at the scene after a phone call and took Susmoy to hospital. No one has been identified in the incident so far. Police are reviewing CCTV footage and the investigation is continuing. He said a case will be filed under Section 328 once a complaint is received.
