DHAKA — Prime Minister Tarique Rahman met Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, leader of the opposition in the national parliament, at his parliamentary secretariat office on Monday afternoon. The prime minister welcomed the opposition leader to his office.

After their conversation, the prime minister walked the opposition leader part of the way back toward his own parliamentary secretariat office. Those present praised the prime minister’s courtesy and decorum.

At noon, the prime minister and the opposition leader had stood side by side for the funeral prayer of Dilara Hafiz, wife of Speaker Maj. (retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, on the south plaza of the National Parliament. After the prayer, the two leaders walked together toward the parliament building.

The opposition leader then expressed an interest in speaking with the prime minister, who immediately invited Dr. Shafiqur Rahman to his parliamentary secretariat office.

Atiqur Rahman Rumon, additional press secretary to the prime minister, said the meeting was brief. The two leaders spoke for about 20 minutes. After the short conversation, the opposition leader left the prime minister’s office, with the prime minister again walking him part of the way back.
