HAKIMPUR — Social welfare and women and children’s affairs minister Abu Jafar Md. Zahid Hossain said BNP believes in democracy and people’s empowerment, speaking Thursday at an event in Hakimpur upazila.

“BNP believes in democracy and people’s empowerment. Khaleda Zia endured hardship and persecution to restore democracy. Even so, she said in the end — not revenge, retaliation or destruction; rather, BNP’s work is to stand with the people, to be there in their time of need and to give them courage,” Hossain said.

He was speaking as chief guest at an event at the Hakimpur upazila parishad auditorium. The upazila administration and disaster management office organized the program to distribute food grain, corrugated iron sheets and cash to poor, distressed and vulnerable families affected by recent hailstorms. In the initial round, 334 affected families in the upazila received cash, corrugated iron sheets and rice.

“The current government is for 180 million people. We are committed to serving them. This government belongs to everyone, not just one religion or political belief,” Hossain said. “If we cooperate with the current government, we will be able to build a Bangladesh that is livable and well-governed for future generations.”

“We must speak out against any irregularity, oppression or injustice, so no one can tarnish the government’s image,” he said. “BNP activists and leaders must remain alert.”
