BHAIRAB — Police arrested two men, including one posing as a journalist, after they allegedly tried to abduct a 16-year-old madrasa student on her way to school in Kishoreganj’s Bhairab upazila.
The incident took place Saturday, March 28, in the Newtown area of Bhairab upazila.
Those detained were identified as Mohammad Jasim Mia, 48, and Mohammad Roni Mia, 32, both residents of the Gachtalaghat area of the municipal town. Jasim Mia had been wielding influence in the area by introducing himself as a journalist and political activist, according to complaints.
According to a written complaint filed by the girl’s father, Mohammad Harunur Rashid, Jasim Mia had been harassing the student on her way to and from the madrasa for a long time. The student was walking to the madrasa Saturday morning when the suspects allegedly tried to force her into an auto-rickshaw in front of the Bhai Bhai Villa in the Newtown area. Local residents responded to her screams and rescued her, then detained Jasim Mia and Roni Mia and called police.
Bhairab Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge Ataur Rahman Akond said officers detained the two at the scene and brought them to the station. The initial investigation confirmed the incident, he said.
