NANDAIL, Bangladesh — State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasir Khan Chowdhury set an unusual example by breaking state protocol to help bury a body in the Jahangirpur union of Nandail upazila.
On Friday, March 27, the minister was returning to the upazila headquarters after laying foundation stones and inaugurating two development projects in Jahangirpur union. On his way back, he noticed that a body was being buried at a cemetery beside the road. He stopped his motorcade and joined the work.
Eyewitness Md. Enamul Kadir, member secretary of the Nandail upazila unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, said: “Ignoring official protocol, he stepped out of his car and went straight to the cemetery. Without hesitation, he climbed into the grave himself and helped lower the body from the bier. We were moved to see a minister standing alongside ordinary people and taking part in the burial.”
Mizanur Rahman Liton, senior joint convener of the upazila BNP unit, said: “You cannot imagine that a state minister would carry the bier of an ordinary person and step into the grave to bury them. His simple lifestyle and genuine love for people have moved us.”
Residents of Jahangirpur union and local people said that returning to ordinary roots while setting aside the pride of position was a rare example in the present time. “Such humane behavior by an elected representative will remain a model for others in society,” they said.
After the burial, the minister joined the gathering in a prayer for the soul of the deceased. He then resumed his journey.
Photos and news of the state minister’s humane act spread on social media, drawing widespread praise from the public.
