HALUAGHAT, Bangladesh — A 9-year-old boy was beaten to death after being locked in a room in Mymensingh’s Haluaghat upazila over an allegation that he had stolen betel nuts, his family said. The killing took place Friday evening, Feb. 13, in Bausa village of Swadeshi union.

The victim, Emon, 9, was the son of Dulal Mia of Bausa village. The accused, Atahar Ali, 32, was a neighbor of the boy.

Local residents said Atahar Ali had recently accused Emon of stealing betel nuts. A village arbitration session was convened and a fine was imposed on the boy. On Friday evening, Atahar called the boy into his home and beat him to death, residents said. When neighbors learned of the killing, Atahar fled. Police arrived at the scene after being informed.

A local woman said Emon was locked in a room and beaten to death over a small allegation of betel nut theft. “We want justice,” she said.
