BERA, Pabna — Shipping and labor adviser Brig. Gen. (retd.) M. Sakhawat Hossain inaugurated a modern terminal complex at the Nagarbari river port in Pabna’s Bera upazila on Saturday.
The complex, built under a project titled “Construction of River Port with Associated Facilities,” was inaugurated around 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7.
Commodore Arif Ahmed Mostafa, chairman of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), presided. Among those attending were Delowara Begum, additional secretary of the Ministry of Shipping, and zila parishad official Mohammad Mafizul Islam.
The project was approved on June 20, 2018, with the aim of developing modern port infrastructure at Nagarbari to improve inland water transport links to greater northern Bangladesh, which includes the Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions. Construction began on July 1 of that year and was completed on June 30, 2025. The total cost of the project was 556.907 crore taka (about $46.4 million).
Goods including fertilizer, cement, stone, sand and coal are loaded and unloaded at the historic Nagarbari ghat on the west bank of the Jamuna River and trucked to various areas of the northern region. The ghat was operated under the Aricha river port, established in 1983. Before the Jamuna Bridge opened in 1998, the country was divided in two by the Brahmaputra, Jamuna, Meghna and Padma rivers, with the Aricha-Daulatdia and Aricha-Nagarbari ferry crossings serving the southwest and northwest regions under the Aricha river port.
