College student killed in Barishal land dispute attack

BARISHAL — A 25-year-old college student died after rivals attacked him over a land dispute in Bakerganj upazila of Barishal district, police said Tuesday.

Saidul Islam Sajib, a master’s student at Government Barishal College, was a resident of Lochnabad village in Rangashree union of the upazila.

Bakerganj police station officer-in-charge Khandaker K.M. Sohel Rana confirmed the death on Tuesday morning. Sajib died early Tuesday, around 2 a.m., while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The victim’s family said the attack happened Saturday morning when they began building a shop on their own land. Eight to 10 hired attackers from rival families in the area struck them with sharp weapons and sticks and vandalized the property, according to the complaint. Sajib was seriously injured.

He was first taken to a local health complex and then to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal. As his condition worsened he was transferred to Dhaka, where he died during treatment.

Sajib’s father, Abul Hossain Khan, his mother, Piyara Begum, and several other family members were also injured in the attack. They received treatment at a local hospital.

Sajib’s father has filed a case against eight people at Bakerganj police station. No arrests had been made as of Tuesday.
