KURIGRAM — Police arrested a man on allegations that he and two associates raped a 22-year-old woman after he lured her with a promise of marriage in Nageshwari upazila, police said. The arrest of the accused, identified as Zahid, came after the incident overnight on Monday, March 23, in the Char Luchni area of Bamandanga union.
Police said the woman, a resident of Kedar union in Nageshwari upazila, had developed a relationship over mobile phone with Zahid Hasan, of Dhariar Par village in Ballabher Khash union. On the evening of March 23, Zahid promised to take her to Dhaka and marry her, police said. En route, in the Aynal’s Ghat area, he allegedly took her to a corn field on the banks of the Dudhkumar River, where Zahid, his friend Babu and another unidentified man raped her in turn and fled, police said. Late that night, the woman took shelter in a house in the area. A case was filed at Kachakata police station on the night of Tuesday, March 24. Police arrested Zahid, the main accused, in a raid that same night.
Muntasir Mamun Mun, the additional superintendent of police in Kurigram (Bhurungamari circle), said the district police were treating the matter with seriousness. The main accused has been arrested and sent to jail through the court, he said. Efforts are continuing to arrest the other two suspects, he said.
