KURIGRAM — Azimul Islam, 24, a university student in Fulbari upazila of Kurigram, attempted suicide after his family could not give him money he had requested and died Saturday, April 4, while undergoing treatment at a hospital, police said. The incident occurred in Shimulbari union.
Azimul Islam was the son of Fazlul Haque, an auto-rickshaw driver in Shimulbari village of Shimulbari union. He was a student at Begum Rokeya University, family members said.
According to relatives, Azimul came home Thursday and asked his father, Fazlul Haque, for a substantial sum of money. His father, citing financial hardship, was unable to provide it. Hurt by the refusal, Azimul went to his room and attempted to hang himself, family members said.
His mother cut the rope and rescued him. Family members first took him to the Fulbari upazila health complex and, as his condition worsened, transferred him to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where he died Saturday morning while under treatment.
Relatives, friends and residents gathered at the family’s home to pay their respects. His body was brought home from the hospital at about 3 p.m.
Mohammad Shariful Islam Sohel, chairman of the Shimulbari union parishad, said the death was tragic. “None of us can accept that such a talented student has gone this way. I have heard that this happened because his needs could not be met due to financial difficulties,” he said.
Mahmud Hasan Naim, the officer-in-charge of Fulbari police station, confirmed the death and said an unnatural death case had been filed and the matter was under investigation.
