MOSCOW — Russia views U.S. President Donald Trump’s ceasefire declaration as a severe defeat for the United States, according to a Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, who said the strategy of “unilateral, aggressive and provocative” attacks against Iran failed badly.
In an interview with state-owned Sputnik radio, spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said declarations had been made just days earlier of “even more aggressive, expansive and imminent victory.” Much had been written on social media. But all of that has now collapsed dramatically. The unilateral and provocative strategy has failed, she said.
Since the start of the offensive against Iran, President Donald Trump had posted on social media about intensifying attacks. On Tuesday, he threatened to destroy Iran’s entire civilization. Just hours later, he announced an agreement to reach a ceasefire.
In the interview, Zakharova said Russia from the beginning has called for an immediate halt to aggression against Iran. Moscow has emphasized political and diplomatic solutions. The situation has no military solution, she said.
The war that began Feb. 28 saw Iran lose its supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In response, Tehran launched drone and missile strikes on U.S. military installations in Israel, Jordan, Iraq and Gulf countries. Tehran also halted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Several thousand people died in the 39-day war.
