DHAKA — Parliament on Wednesday passed the July Mass Uprising Protection and Liability Determination Bill 2026, which paves the way for the withdrawal of all civil and criminal cases against participants in the 2024 uprising, lawmakers said.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmad introduced the bill in Parliament on Wednesday, April 8, and it was passed by unanimous voice vote, lawmakers said.
Under the new law, formally titled the July Mass Uprising (Protection and Liability Determination) Ordinance, 2026, civil and criminal cases and legal proceedings against participants in the uprising will be dropped according to set procedures, lawmakers said. The law also bars any new cases or legal action against any person involved in the uprising in the future.
Earlier, Parliament passed an Anti-Terrorism Act amendment bill, the Anti-Terrorism Act Amendment Ordinance Bill 2026, that provides a legal basis for banning the political activities of the ousted Awami League, lawmakers said. Under the amendment, the government now has the authority to ban not only individuals and entities but also political parties and organizations on charges of involvement in terrorism, lawmakers said.
