ISLAMABAD — An Iranian delegation has arrived in Pakistan’s capital to hold talks with the United States, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The Iranian delegation will be led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the report said. The U.S. delegation will be led by Vice President JD Vance. It remains unclear, however, whether the two sides will hold peace talks. The uncertainty stems from the Lebanon issue.
A ceasefire between Iran and the United States took effect on April 7, the previous Wednesday. At the time, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who mediated the ceasefire, said Lebanon would also be covered. But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the announcement within hours. Israel then carried out a series of attacks in Lebanon. About 200 people have been killed and roughly 1,200 wounded in those attacks so far. Iran has now set a condition that the United States must first halt the attacks in Lebanon before it will come to the table. Israel has not agreed to that condition. The dispute has sharply raised tensions between the two sides.
