Truck plunges into ditch in Cumilla, killing 7

CUMILLA — A truck overturned and fell into a ditch in Daudkandi upazila of Cumilla, killing seven people and injuring at least six.

The accident occurred around 3 a.m. Monday near Tasfin Pump in the Hasanpur area along the Dhaka-Chattogram highway.

The dead were identified as Afzal Hossain, 35, son of Md. Azad of Khalibpur in Nababganj upazila of Dinajpur; Sohrab Hossain, 40, son of Alam of the same area; Salek, 45, son of Fazlur Rahman; Sumon, 21, son of Palash of Bhaighor in Birapur upazila; Bishnu, 35, of the same village; Abu Hossain, 30, son of Mojirul Islam; and Abdur Rashid, 55, son of Rakibullah.

Iqbal Bahar Mojumder, officer-in-charge of Daudkandi Highway Crossing police station, confirmed the incident.

Police and local sources said a truck carrying rice from Dinajpur to Chattogram lost control on reaching the site. The vehicle veered into the roadside ditch and overturned, trapping 13 passengers riding on top of the truck.

Seven of them died at the scene, and another six were injured. The injured were taken to a local hospital. Traffic on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway was briefly disrupted but has since returned to normal, Mojumder said. Police and fire service personnel carried out the rescue operation, and the truck has been recovered. The bodies are being held at the police station and will be handed over to relatives. Legal proceedings are under way.
