DHAKA — Dengue fever, transmitted by the Aedes mosquito, continues to spread. Two more people died from the disease in the 24 hours from 8 a.m. Tuesday to 8 a.m. Wednesday. Both were residents of the Dhaka South City Corporation area.

The deaths bring this year’s total to 81. Nearly half of those — 39 — died in the 30 days of July.

Another 386 patients were admitted to hospitals across the country with dengue in the past 24 hours. The total number of patients admitted with dengue this year has reached 20,702.

The figures were released Wednesday, July 30, in a dengue bulletin from the Health Emergency Operations Center and Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services.

The directorate releases data on patients admitted to hospitals across the country. Many dengue patients, however, do not seek hospital admission. Some go to doctors’ private chambers, and the government has no way to capture dengue cases identified at private laboratories and clinics. As a result, the true number of people contracting the disease is not known.

The bulletin said admissions in the past 24 hours included 106 in Barishal division (outside the city corporation), 64 in Chattogram division (outside the city corporation), 62 in Dhaka division (outside city corporations), 29 in Dhaka North City Corporation, 49 in Dhaka South City Corporation, 23 in Khulna division (outside the city corporation), five in Mymensingh division (outside the city corporation), 45 in Rajshahi division (outside the city corporation) and three in Rangpur division (outside the city corporation). A total of 378 dengue patients were released from hospitals during the period.

So far this year, 19,329 patients have been released from hospitals. Through July 30, 58.7 percent of all dengue patients were male and 41.3 percent were female.

Two more people died from dengue in the past 24 hours, raising this year’s death toll to 81.

An analysis of dengue infection data shows the highest annual hospital admissions in Bangladesh were in 2023, when 321,179 patients were admitted.

In 2024 the figure was 101,214. Earlier annual totals were 62,382 in 2022, 28,429 in 2021, 1,405 in 2020 and 101,354 in 2019.

Between January and July 30 last year, 6,144 dengue cases and 56 deaths were recorded. Compared with the same period last year, dengue hospital admissions are up 237 percent and deaths are up more than 44 percent.

Public health experts told Jugantor that stagnant water after rains and rising temperatures are creating favorable conditions for mosquito breeding, fueling the spread of dengue. They said individual awareness is essential and people should not rely on government measures alone.
