DHAKA — Multiple blockages have been detected in the heart of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami chief Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, and doctors have decided on urgent bypass surgery, his personal secretary Mohammad Nazrul Islam confirmed.
Rahman collapsed twice on stage on July 19 while addressing a national rally at the capital’s Suhrawardy Udyan. He received initial treatment at Ibn Sina Hospital in Dhanmondi and returned home the same night.
Nazrul Islam said the Jamaat chief was admitted to United Hospital in the capital at 11 a.m. Wednesday as part of a routine health check. An angiogram performed around 4 p.m. under cardiologist Dr. Mominuzzaman revealed three blockages in his heart. Doctors have recommended bypass surgery, and preparations are under way.
News of the blockages caused concern within his family and party leadership. Party leaders advised him to seek treatment abroad, but Rahman has decided to be treated in Bangladesh. He and his family have asked the public to pray for his quick recovery.
