KOLKATA — Bangladeshi model and actress Shanta Pal was arrested in Kolkata after Indian voter and Aadhaar cards were found in her possession, police said.
Police at Park Street station arrested Pal from the Jadavpur station area. Indian voter and Aadhaar cards were recovered from her, police said.
Rupesh Kumar, head of detectives for the Kolkata Police, said Pal was arrested on July 28 from a flat in Bikramgarh. An investigation is underway into how she obtained the Indian identity documents.
Pal had been living in Kolkata under the cover of running an app-cab business, according to police. She had been renting a flat at Bijoygarh in Jadavpur since 2023, but used different addresses at different times.
She recently filed a complaint of fraud at Thakurpukur police station, again using a different address. Pal had modeled for two well-known Bangladeshi brands and had taken part in several beauty contests.
Suspicions grew after her arrest because of the multiple addresses in her name. Several Bangladeshi passports, a secondary-school examination admit card and an airline ID card were also recovered from her.
To advance the investigation, police are trying to determine what documents she presented to obtain the Aadhaar and voter cards. They are in contact with the relevant government offices and have sent details about her ration card to the food department for verification.
Pal made her big-screen debut in the film “Bachelor in Trip.” She also worked in a Tamil film, “Yeralava,” directed by Viswanath Rao. She had also been involved in several Bangladeshi projects.
