MIAMI — Lionel Messi delivered two assists as Inter Miami beat Mexico’s Atlas 2-1 in Rodrigo De Paul’s debut for the club.
The relationship between Lionel Messi and Rodrigo De Paul has grown beyond teammates into deep friendship. Perhaps drawn by that friendship, the Argentine midfielder has moved to the United States, joining Messi’s club Inter Miami. Messi handed Miami the win in De Paul’s debut with two assists. Miami beat Club Atlas 2-1 early Thursday, July 31, Bangladesh time.
Telasco Segovia and Marcelo Weigandt each scored from Messi assists for Miami. Atlas’s only goal came from Rivaldo Lozano.
Neither team scored in the first half at home ground Chase Stadium. The deadlock broke in the 60th minute of the second half. Segovia received the ball in the Atlas box from a one-two between Busquets and Messi. Given the chance, the Venezuelan midfielder buried it.
Atlas equalized in the 80th minute. Lozano received the ball in the Miami box, beat two defenders and brought Atlas level.
The drama was not over. In the sixth minute of injury time, Messi again played the savior. Cutting into the box, he played the ball to Weigandt, whose quick shot gave Miami its first win in three matches.
