BERLIN — Israel is increasingly isolated diplomatically over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and European moves to recognize a Palestinian state, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said.
The United States and Israel recently boycotted a U.N. conference on the two-state solution. Pointing to that, Wadephul made the comments in a statement Thursday, July 31, ahead of a visit to Israel.
Wadephul also said that given how some members of the Israeli government are openly threatening to annex occupied territories, many European countries are now prepared to recognize a Palestinian state without waiting for negotiations.
Last week, more than 70 Israeli lawmakers, including several members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition government, passed a motion calling for the imposition of “Israeli sovereignty” on the occupied West Bank.
Reiterating Berlin’s position, Wadephul said in strong language that talks on recognizing a Palestinian state should be wrapped up. The process of recognition must begin now, and Germany must also take action in response to any unilateral steps, he said.
On conditions in the Gaza Strip, he said more than 2 million people there face famine. Israel must allow “immediate, broad and sustained” humanitarian access to ease the “dramatic” situation, he said.
Air drops of relief supplies have been arranged, with Germany taking part, he said. But these cannot be a substitute for land deliveries. Adequate aid can only reach civilians by road, he said, adding that Germany is working urgently to restore overland access.
