Two children drown in Bhairab River in Chuadanga

CHUADANGA — Two children drowned in the Bhairab River at Muktarpur village in Jibannagar upazila of Chuadanga district on Sunday while bathing, police said.

The deaths occurred around 1 p.m.

The victims were identified as Junayed, 6, son of Jewel Hossain of Muktarpur village, and Rimon, 7, son of Sajib of the same village.

According to local residents, Junayed and Rimon entered the river to bathe in the afternoon. Jute had been laid in the water for retting at the spot. While playing on the jute bundles, both children slipped into the water. Other children with them shouted for help, and neighbors rushed in to recover the bodies.

Jibannagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mamun Hossain Biswas confirmed the incident. He said villagers had recovered the bodies and taken them home before police could reach the scene. Burial permission was granted to the families after legal procedures were completed, he said.
