CHATTOGRAM — The roughly week-long wait for ships to berth at jetties had become routine at Chattogram port, forcing businesses to wait for their cargo even after vessels arrived. That wait, which began in February, is now starting to come down.
Two crane-equipped container ships that docked Tuesday at the port’s General Cargo Berth, or GCB, were brought to the jetty within one to two days of entering port waters. The wait for ships without their own cranes has come down from seven to 10 days to four. The number of vessels anchored at sea waiting to berth has fallen from 14 or 15 to six.
Raw materials for export-oriented garment factories and other industries are imported in containers. Delays in delivery mean longer production times. Exports are also entirely shipped in containers. After nearly six months of strain, businesses say improving conditions have brought some relief.
