KHARTOUM — At least 1,000 people were killed when a landslide destroyed an entire village in the remote Marrah Mountains of western Sudan, a rebel group said, the BBC reported.
Days of heavy rain triggered the landslide on Sunday, which wiped out the village of Tarasin. Only one person in the village survived, the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army said in a statement.
Abdelwahid Mohamed Nur, the group’s leader, said the dead included women, men and children, and that urgent help was needed from the United Nations and international relief agencies to recover the bodies.
The statement said the village had been entirely buried in the landslide.
Many residents of North Darfur state had taken refuge in the Marrah Mountains region after fighting broke out between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The area faces severe shortages of food and medicine.
More than half of Sudan’s population is suffering acute food shortages as the civil war, now in its third year, drags on. Millions have been displaced, and El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, is currently under bombardment.
The civil war, which began in April 2023 between the army and the RSF, has pushed the country toward famine. Allegations of genocide have surfaced in the West Darfur region.
A U.S. official said last year that 150,000 people had been killed since the war began in 2023. Roughly 12 million people have been driven from their homes.
