DHAKA — The Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission has recommended that the government allow imports of eggs and onions, along with duty and tax waivers, once domestic prices cross set thresholds, officials said Thursday.

Imports of eggs would be permitted once a dozen exceeds 150 taka, while onion imports would be allowed once the price tops 90 taka per kilogram, according to the commission’s letter to the commerce secretary.

A dozen eggs sold for about 140 taka in markets Thursday, having recently crossed 150 taka. Onions in the capital’s wholesale markets were selling for 70 to 80 taka per kilogram, depending on quality.

The commission said Bangladesh produced 4.4 million tonnes of onions domestically in the 2024-25 fiscal year. Opening imports had helped stabilize prices and supply, it said.

Green chili prices have also risen in recent weeks, with a kilogram selling for between 220 and 260 taka. The commission recommended waiving the 20 percent supplementary duty on green chili imports through Sept. 30 to stabilize supply and prices. It also proposed that imports be assessed on actual transaction value rather than the standard dutiable value.

To stabilize the vegetable market, the commission asked the National Consumer Rights Protection Directorate to take necessary measures. The agency said monitoring of the supply chain from farm gate to retail must be strengthened.
