DHAKA — Bangladesh has closed three land ports along the border with India and suspended operations at a fourth, the Chief Adviser’s press secretary said Thursday.

The decisions were approved at a meeting of the Advisory Council, press secretary Shafiqul Alam told reporters.

The three closed land ports are Chilahati in Nilphamari, Daulatganj in Chuadanga and Tegamukh in Rangamati. Operations at the Balla land port in Habiganj have been suspended.

Alam said a cabinet committee had been examining the country’s land ports.

“There are many land ports where no work is being done, where there is no infrastructure,” Alam said. “They were ones where nothing was actually happening.”

“Officials have to be posted, and a lot of money has to be spent on operations. But they are of no use. Those land ports have been closed,” he said.
