Funeral held for JU teacher Jannatul Ferdous

SAVAR — A funeral prayer was held for Jannatul Ferdous, assistant professor at Jahangirnagar University’s Faculty of Fine Arts, who died while participating in the vote count of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) election.

The funeral was held Friday after Jumma prayers at the university’s central playground. She fell ill while taking part in vote-counting activities for the JUCSU election and died.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Kamrul Ahsan, teachers from the philosophy department and other departments of the university, and her colleagues attended the funeral. Vice-president candidates from various panels participating in the central student union election were also seen attending.

The JUCSU election returning officer’s office confirmed that Jannatul died at 9:30 a.m. that day.

Jannatul felt chest pain while on duty and was immediately taken to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar, where the attending physician declared her dead. She was an assistant professor in the JU Fine Arts Department.

Shameem Reza, associate professor and chairman of the Fine Arts Department, said: “She felt unwell during the vote count and was taken by ambulance to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar. The doctor later declared her dead. We are grief-stricken at the death of our colleague.”
