SAVAR — Mazharul Islam, general secretary candidate of the United Students’ Alliance, warned of stronger action if the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) election results are not announced Friday.
He issued the warning at a news conference Friday at 5 p.m. below the JUCSU election commission office at the university.
“It has been more than 24 hours since voting ended, yet the election commission has not been able to announce the results. Counting has been completed for only 21 halls of the hall student councils. We know there are twice as many candidates for the central students’ union. So the announcement of the results has become uncertain. We can see that a group of BNP-affiliated teachers is still trying to derail the election. They are engaged in various kinds of conspiracies against the election. We want to make it clear that if the results are not announced today, we will be forced to take a stronger position,” he said.
Chhatra Dal and BAGCHAS together halted the automated machine vote count on a flimsy pretext, he said. They labeled the OMR machine vote-counting company as a Jamaat-affiliated institution, making the counting difficult. “Yet yesterday we presented evidence that the institution is BNP-affiliated. Even so, the count is being conducted manually for no reason. This is causing intolerable hardship to teachers and students. We want the JUCSU results announced immediately,” he said.
