DHAKA — Jamaat-e-Islami chief Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said it was shameful that fighters of the July uprising had to take to the streets and were beaten by police of the interim government on the very day the July Charter was signed.
He made the remarks Friday, Oct. 17, at a labor rally in Dhaka’s Mirpur 10 area.
“It is shameful that the July fighters were beaten by the police of the interim government,” the Jamaat chief said. “The demands of many are being met, while they are being deprived.”
He said no other group in the history of Bangladesh had endured as much oppression as Jamaat, and that the party therefore best understood the pain of those wronged in July.
Rahman said Jamaat had not taken personal revenge against anyone since the July movement, despite having had the opportunity. He said the party had not engaged in any wrongdoing and pledged that no one would be allowed to commit crimes in the days ahead.
