DHAKA — Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has stressed the need for a legal basis and an assured implementation process for the July Charter immediately after its signing. Acting amir Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher said the parties had reached agreement on the charter through Friday’s signing, but its legal basis is still outstanding and the government should ensure it quickly.
Taher made the remarks to reporters after the July Charter signing on Friday evening.
Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad told the media: “We held discussions over five consecutive days. At the closing session, the National Consensus Commission’s co-chair, Professor Ali Riaz, gave the conclusion. He said a set of recommendations on the implementation process will be drawn up, and we will get the draft, and it will also go to the government. But we have tried repeatedly to reach them and could not. We spoke about it today too. From there, the implementation process has become unclear to the nation.”
“We said legal basis must be given. If they do not give a legal basis, then this charter, the spirit of the revolution and the consensus reform — those objectives will be subverted and become uncertain,” Azad added. “We have said earlier that for the legal basis, an order must be issued and it must be made durable through a referendum.”
Taher also pressed for legal recognition, adding that the charter has been signed but, without legal recognition, its effective application has yet to take place. He urged the government to act quickly to implement the policies and views agreed in the National Consensus Commission’s lengthy meetings.
The Jamaat leader warned that any delay or alternative thinking by the government would be considered national betrayal of the spirit of July and would create new political complications.
