DINAJPUR — A court in Birganj on Sunday sent six Awami League leaders to jail in a case over the 2014 killings of two Chhatra Shibir activists, Salauddin and Asadul Islam.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Md. Ibrahim Ali ordered the men to be remanded after they surrendered and sought bail in the early afternoon, court officials said.
Those jailed include former Awami League general secretary Nur Islam Noor, 54; former Union Parishad chairman MA Khalek, 56; and Rezaul Karim Sheikh, 52, along with Shatgram Union Awami League president and head teacher Golam Mostafa, 62; Md. Aminul Islam, 55; and Jubo League Maricha Union general secretary Shafiul Azam, 45. They were taken to Dinajpur district jail in the evening.
Court Police Inspector Md. Aminul Islam confirmed the order.
According to court records, the case was filed last year by Zahura Begum, wife of Abul Kalam Azad of Bhagirpara village in Birganj upazila, naming 27 people including former lawmaker Manoranjan Shil Gopal and about 100 unidentified suspects in the killings of her two sons.
The complaint says Shibir activists Salauddin, 16, and Asadul Haque, 15, were severely wounded on Jan. 5, 2014 — the day of the 10th national parliamentary election — when assailants attacked them in the Bhelapukur area of Birganj. Both died at hospital. Police at the time refused to register a case, but the complaint was filed last year following the fall of the Awami League government.
Birganj police station Officer-in-Charge Md. Abdul Gafur said the case is under investigation and several suspects have already been arrested and jailed.
