DHAKA — A major fire at the cargo village of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka caused widespread damage, destroying millions of taka worth of imported goods, officials said.
During the blaze, 13 flights were diverted to Chattogram, Sylhet and Kolkata, India. Thirty-seven fire service units were deployed to bring the fire under control. Air traffic resumed after the fire was brought under control around 9 p.m. Saturday. A six-member committee has been formed to investigate the incident.
Security agencies have preliminary information indicating the fire may be part of anti-state sabotage, the government said. If credible evidence of sabotage is found, swift and firm action will be taken.
According to the notice, the committee will be chaired by the chief of flight safety at Biman Bangladesh Airlines. A representative of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism will serve as a member.
Other members are the general manager (corporate safety and quality), the chief engineer (quality assurance), the deputy general manager (security), the deputy general manager (cargo and export) and the deputy manager (insurance).
The notice said the committee will identify the cause of the fire, determine the extent of damage, fix responsibility and make recommendations to prevent such incidents in the future. The committee has been asked to submit its report to the managing director and CEO within five working days. The order is effective immediately, the notice said.
