Khagrachhari bus crash kills 2, injures at least 13

KHAGRACHHARI — Two people were killed and at least 13 injured Friday when a passenger bus overturned in Khagrachhari, police said.

The crash occurred around 11:15 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, in the Sapmara area on the Dhaka-Khagrachhari regional road.

The dead were identified as Anil Chakma, 32, the bus’s supervisor and son of Bindu Chakma of Chowdhurypara, and Abdur Razzak Sowdagor, 72, son of the late Abdul Karim of Muslimpara in Dighinala Kobakhali.

Police and witnesses said a Shanti Paribahan bus traveling from Baghaichari in Rangamati to Chattogram lost control while coming down a hill past a police checkpost in the Sapmara area, and overturned. At least 13 people were injured. Fire service personnel recovered the two bodies from the scene. Six of the injured were sent to Matiranga Upazila Health Complex and seven to Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Kazi Wajed Ali said the two bodies were recovered from the scene. They will be handed over to relatives after autopsies, he said. Further legal action is under way. The damaged bus has been recovered and taken into custody, he said.
