GAZIPUR — Hundreds of workers at a garment factory in Gazipur’s Konabari blocked a regional road for about 10 hours Saturday, demanding two months of unpaid wages.
Workers at Sadhin Garments Ltd blocked the Konabari Palli Bidyut Jarun regional road from 8 a.m. until about 5:45 p.m., creating long traffic jams that left pedestrians and passengers stranded.
Workers said management had not paid wages for two months despite repeated notices promising payment. On Oct. 5, management set Oct. 18 as the payment date. When workers arrived at the factory Saturday morning, they found the gates closed. They then took position on the regional road outside the factory and began protesting.
“For the past two months, we have been working duty and overtime. But we still have not been paid. The current month is also nearly over. We are barely getting by. We were forced to block the road,” said Hasi Begum, a sewing operator at the factory.
Kamruzzaman, the administrative manager of Sadhin Garments Ltd, said: “We are trying to pay the workers’ outstanding wages for the past two months. There has been some delay because of the factory’s financial difficulties.”
Morshed Zaman, inspector of Gazipur Industrial Police, said the workers blocked the road over unpaid wages. A notice was posted on the factory’s main gate from the owners’ side saying wages would be paid on the 24th of the month, but workers rejected it. Efforts are under way to resolve the matter by contacting factory management, he said.
