RAJBARI — Law enforcement officers arrested nine fishermen for catching mother hilsa in the Padma River in Goalanda upazila of Rajbari in defiance of a government fishing ban, police said.

Members of the Daulatdia river police and the Coast Guard conducted the operation from midnight Tuesday, Oct. 7.

They seized 6,000 meters of current net and about 10 kg of mother hilsa from the Kalabagan area of the Padma. The fish were later distributed to the orphanage at the Daulatdia Khanka Sharif.

Trinath Saha, in charge of the Daulatdia river police outpost, confirmed the arrests. “We have been conducting regular operations on the Padma to protect mother hilsa,” he said. “Continuing those operations, we have detained nine fishermen and filed two regular cases against them under the Fish Protection and Conservation Act. They have been sent to court. The seized nets are being kept as evidence.”
